How Long Does It Take To Ripen An Avocado? Is There A Better Way To Ripen Them?

Naturally, ripening an avocado takes at least 3-4 days, but if you’re hosting an impromptu meal at home and want to make some delicious avocado recipes, you can use other ways to ripen them faster.

A microwave is one of the easiest and simplest ways to ripen avocados. All you need is a fork, knife, and plastic wrap; in less than 15 minutes, you will have avocados ready. Then, use them to prepare some fantastic quick dishes.

How To Ripen Avocados Perfectly?

Avocados ripen best on the countertop. They’ll keep for up to five days if stored properly, but they’re ready to eat within three.

To test whether an avocado is ripe enough to slice, gently press down on it; it shouldn’t give way easily. If it does, it needs a little longer.

Place an open brown paper bag over the fruit to speed up the process. This traps moisture inside the bag, helping the fruit ripen faster. Once it’s fully ripe, it won’t feel heavy like unripe ones do.

Things To Know Before Using The Microwave

Microwaves work differently than other cooking methods. First, you need to pay attention to the fruit when heating it.

Overheating causes the food to dry out quickly and may even cause the item to explode.

Ripening the avocados in the microwave changes the taste and texture rather than naturally ripening them.

Before putting them in the microwave, you can wrap the pierced and cut avocados in plastic wrap or parchment paper, but ensure that you cover the avocados separately and not together.

Removing the pit ensures the even distribution of the heat.

How To Tell If The Avocado Is Ripe?

Green, hard avocados are 4–7 days away from ripening. Green avocados that are firm and hard when touched are still too immature and will have 4 days to 1 week on the kitchen counter before they’re ready for eating. Avocados lack flavor when they’re not ripe.

Dark avocados with flecked green are ready now. Avocados that are dark green or almost black on the outside are still firm with a slight flex and are perfect for eating immediately.

The inside of such is bright green, leaves the pit quickly, and has a naturally buttery taste with a silky texture.

If the fruit is black with spots, they’re overripe and not suitable for consumption.

Alternate Ways To Ripen Avocados

How To Ripen Avocados In A Paper Bag With Fruit?

Avocados are notoriously tricky to ripen, especially in the winter months. If you have the time, let them sit and ripen naturally.

You can speed the process by placing the avocados in a brown paper bag with other fruits like tomatoes, bananas, or apples, and you can cut down on the amount of time it takes to reach peak flavor.

The trick lies in releasing ethylene gas into the air. Ethylene is a natural hormone that helps plants grow and speeds up fruit ripening.

This process happens naturally when you place fruit in a paper bag with another fruit that releases ethylene.

So, while you might think you’d need to buy unique bags with ethylene-releasing pockets, you need to use standard grocery store produce bags.

Covering the avocado with flour or rice and placing them in a paper bag does not work effectively. You can avoid this.

How To Ripen Avocados In The Oven?

The best way to ripen avocados is to place them in the oven. This method works because ethylene gas speeds up the ripening process and is naturally produced when fruits ripen.

You’ll accelerate the natural ripening process by trapping this fruit.

This technique can ripen avocados, pears, peaches, bananas, plums, tomatoes, and watermelons. Just make sure to heat the oven to 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

You want to avoid temperatures above 250 degrees Fahrenheit since that could damage the fruit.

Wrap the avocado in aluminum foil, and place it in a shallow ovenproof dish. Bake it and keep a check on it every 5-10 minutes.

Once it is soft as desired, remove, let it cool and unwrap. Please place them in the refrigerator for an hour or longer as required.
