Quiche is delicious, a versatile meal served hot or cold, but one thing that might leave you scratching your head is the question: Can I reheat quiche?
But what methods can you use to reheat quiche? Can you do it in the microwave or is it best reheated in the oven?
Can you reheat it in the toaster? Well, we tried three different methods of reheating quiche. This is what we found…
What To Bear In Mind When Reheating Your Quiche?
If you are thinking about reheating your quiche, you’ll need to think about all the different ingredients that go into it, as this will affect the time that it takes to reheat.
If you have a quiche that contains vegetables like onions, peppers, ham, pork or seafood such as shrimp or fish, then you’ll need to bear in mind that those ingredients will cook in different ways.
You’ll also need to think about what device you are going to use to reheat your quiche.
Here are some of the devices that you can use when you are warming up your quiche again:
- Oven – this will be the most thorough method of reheating your quiche, capable of some of the highest temperatures and the most penetrating cooking.
- Microwave – this will not be able to reach some of the high temperatures of an oven, which is why you might get a slightly soggy result.
- Air fryer – this is also great at attaining high temperatures and evaporating all the moisture in your quiche. However, the results might be a little crispy, lacking that distinctive moist texture.
If you are going to be reheating your quiche, then the most important thing you’ll want to do is preserve the fluffy egg texture and the crunchy, crumbly outer crust.
However, one of the most common issues that people find when they are reheating quiche is the fact that it does go soggy and very often does not retain the same flavor as when it is cooked fresh.
One of the main things that you have to be careful of is overcooking your quiche.
This can lead to it getting burnt and becoming way too dried out.
This is one of the risks of using an air fryer, which does cook the quiche to an amazing degree, but it will also burn the outer edges.
What Happens When You Reheat A Quiche In A Toaster Oven?
Here are some amazing tips that you’ll need to think about when you are trying to warm up your quiche in a toaster oven:
- Preheating the oven – you’ll need to make sure that you preheat the oven to 350 degrees before putting your quiche anywhere near it.
- 5-10 minutes cooking for a slice of quiche – placing your quiche on a wire rack (so that it cooks in all directions), put it in the oven for around 5-10 minutes.
- 20 minutes cooking for a whole quiche – if you have a larger quiche, then you’ll need to make sure that it sits in the oven for twice as long.
- Cover with foil – if you want to stop your quiche from browning on the top, then you can cover it with a layer of tin foil.
- Removing foil – if you are going with foil, then you should remove it for the last 5 minutes of cooking so that your quiche will still get a light brown topping.
If you want to reduce the amount of time that your quiche will be sitting in the oven, then allow it to warm to room temperature first.
However, we understand that this will increase the overall time that your quiche will take to reheat – sometimes you just want to eat it!
If you do not have time to let it warm up, then all you have to do is make sure you turn up the dial on your oven and let it get hot for a few minutes more.
When you are reheating a quiche in the oven, you’ll need to make sure that you are taking it out once or twice during the cooking process to ensure that it is warm all the way through to the center.
You can do this by using a temperature probe or sticking a knife in and then pressing it against your wrist to check if it is hot enough.
You’ll need to make sure that the middle is hot, otherwise, this could not only taste bad but it will run the risk of you contracting food poisoning.
If you are putting it on a metal baking tray, then you run the risk of the whole thing being soggy in the middle, even when you have kept it in the oven for the whole 20 minutes.
You should allow the quiche to heat up from the bottom as well as the top.
Using Foil On Your Quiche
Some people even use foil to help with the heating process of your quiche.
This is because the foil is highly conductive and retains a lot of heat and will eventually act as a heat source in and of itself.
If you are cooking an entire quiche, then you might find it helpful to wrap the whole thing in foil as it will prevent the top of the quiche from burning and will help the whole thing cook much quicker and more thoroughly.
How Well Does A Quiche Reheat In The Oven?
This is a decent method of reheating your quiche. When we did it a lot of the integrity, texture and flavor of the quiche were preserved.
However, you will have to keep a close eye on your quiche if you are cooking it in an oven, as it can run the risk of overcooking and burning the crust.
The filling was also still very puffy and moist in the center when we cooked it in the oven.
Again, we were only cooking a portion of quiche, which took a lot quicker.
Each timing will be different depending on how much quiche you are working with, but the general rule is that the larger the quiche, the longer it will take to cook.
We would suggest that you put a large quiche in your oven for 20 minutes, while a small section should only be warmed for around 5-10 minutes.
What Happens When You Reheat A Quiche In A Microwave?
You’ll need to heat up your quiche at 10-second intervals on medium-level heat.
This is because you’ll want to check the quiche frequently to see if it burns.
This will be a slightly slower method of cooking, but that does not mean that a microwave is any less effective.
You can also set your microwave to full power and keep taking it out at 5-second intervals.
You can wait until 10 seconds, but you will increase the risk of your quiche burning, especially at the edges.
A microwave will heat the quiche very quickly, so you might have to leave it to sit for around 1 minute before you serve or eat it.
Here is a step-by-step guide for heating your quiche in the microwave:
- Place on a microwaveable plate – you should make sure that the plate is solid so that the heat can rise and heat the quiche from the bottom.
- Set the microwave power to around 50% – you’ll need to make sure that the microwave is not set to full power, as this will certainly increase the risk of your quiche burning.
- Low power option – if you don’t have the option of putting your microwave on a lower setting, then you should reduce the intervals at which you remove your quiche e.g. instead of 30 seconds, reduce the time to 10 seconds.
- Check the center of your quiche – you’ll need to check the center of your quiche whenever you remove it from the microwave to ensure that it is warmed right through.
- Once you’re satisfied that the quiche is cooked all the way through, then take it out of the microwave and let it stand on your kitchen counter for around 60 seconds.
To make sure that the quiche is microwaved quickly and effectively, you shouldn’t put any more than 2 – 3 slices of quiche in at any one time.
Overloading the microwave will lead to the quiche not being heated evenly, resulting in patches of it being cold and other parts being overcooked.
You’ll need to make sure that you are checking on your quiche regularly, as it contains eggs, which are a very difficult food to cook in the first place, let alone reheat from the refrigerator.
How Well Does A Quiche Reheat In The Microwave?
The pastry in this microwave did come out a little soggy after we tasted it.
It also detracted from the flavor, which we thought was slightly bland and cold.
If you reduce the power to around half, then you will be better able to control the final outcome of your quiche in terms of temperature, texture and flavor.
If you are cooking your quiche at full power, then you should remove it in quicker intervals, as the chances of it getting too hot and burning on the outer edges are greatly increased.
Overall, this was our least favorite method of reheating quiche.
The results were less than satisfactory, although sometimes it can be the most convenient way of warming up your quiche.
We would recommend this method only if preserving the taste and the texture of your quiche does not matter to you.
What Happens When You Reheat A Quiche In An Air Fryer?
An air fryer will easily cook your quiche from its refrigerated state.
All you’ll need to do is heat it to around 300 degrees and then arrange your slices of quiche on a wire bed.
The amount of quiche that you’ll be putting on your cooking tray will all depend on the size of your air fryer.
You should consult the manufacturer’s instructions on how much food you can put in your air fryer at one time.
If you are working with smaller sections of quiche, then we would suggest putting them in your air fryer for anywhere between 4 – 7 minutes.
Here are the steps that you’ll need to follow for reheating your quiche in an air fryer:
- Preheat your fryer – you should set your fryer to around 300 degrees and allow it to heat for around 3 – 5 minutes.
- Let your quiche warm up – once you take it from the fridge, allow the quiche to come up to room temp. This will reduce the amount of cooking time when you do it in the air fryer.
- Put the quiche on the warming rack – arrange the segments of the quiche so that they are around half an inch apart from each other. You probably won’t be able to put a whole quiche on at once.
- Fry for 4 – 7 minutes – Put your quiche in for a short amount of time. You might want to check on it once during this time to see if it’s not burning.
- Remove your quiche – you should retrieve the quiche from the air fryer when it is crispy on the crust and warm and flavorsome in the center.
- Check the center of the quiche regularly to make sure it is warm all the way through.
If you have using an air fryer to cook your quiche before, then you’ll know that the first thing to get warm is the outside of the quiche.
You’ll also need to check the quiche frequently to see if it is warm in the center.
To check the heat of your quiche, simply put a knife in the center for a few seconds and then hold the blade against your wrist.
How Well Does A Quiche Reheat In An Air Fryer?
The one downfall of using the air fryer is that it can dry out your quiche very easily.
You’ll need to keep a special eye on this one to ensure that it does not burn out too easily.
However, having said that, it is a very effective and fast method of reheating your quiche, lying somewhere between the conventional oven and an air fryer.
We did try heating the air fryer to around 350 degrees to see if it would warm the quiche quicker.
However, it made the edges more crispy and dry, with the center being left in almost the same soggy and cold state.
We would also recommend that you heat this one in slices, as it will be very difficult to get a whole large quiche into your air fryer.
If you are doing it in segments, then you’ll want to make sure that you’re keeping it to a limit of around 2 -3 sections per batch.
If you are warming them in batches, make sure you have them ready to go, otherwise, the ones you have just reheated will cool down again very quickly.
How To Store Your Quiche In The Refrigerator?
When you have finished cooking your quiche initially, then you’ll want to make sure that it cools down to room temperature before you put it in the refrigerator.
Then take an airtight plastic container lined with a kitchen towel and place all your segments of quiches in this.
You should make sure that the container is airtight as this will prevent bacteria from accumulating and ultimately reduce the lifespan of your quiche in the fridge.
You can also cover your quiche in tin foil, as this will help to keep it cool.
Quiche will last around 3 – 4 days in the fridge after you have cooked it for the first time.
You can also place them in resealable bags, although you will need to make sure they are placed on a flat safe so that they keep their integrity and shape.
How To Store Your Quiche In The Freezer?
You can store your quiche in the freezer, it will last around 3 months, especially if you put it in a resealable bag or airtight plastic container.
You should try and store your quiche in slices, so it will be much easier to serve when it is properly thawed out.
You’ll need to make sure that all of the air is removed from the bag when you are storing your quiche.
You’ll need to make sure that you consume your quiche as soon as possible after you have frozen it.
This is because the quiche will become rubbery when reheated and will have lost a lot of its flavor.
To thaw out your quiche ready for eating, you’ll need to place it in the fridge overnight until it is at a safe temperature.
