What Country Eats The Most Pizza?

Pizza is a delicacy adored by many around the world.

Every country has a signature dish they are known for – the US for their hamburgers, the British for their fish and chips, France for their frog legs and baguettes, yet pizza is that one food that can bring every country together.

What Country Eats The Most Pizza

Everyone knows that pizza originated from Italy but, to many people’s surprise, this is not the country to consume the most pizza. However, this does not come as a surprise.

Not only are countries able to connect and share food, but there are many countries out there who learn to adapt cuisines and make it their own.

Pizza is loved by many globally and has been changed and adapted to create a new audience, whether that is Americans with their too-cheesy greasy pizzas or the Japanese with their alternative Okonomiyaki, a dish similar to the traditional pizza.

Below we will be going through the ten countries who consume the most pizza, listing the highest consumption to the lowest.

Top Three Pizza Loving Countries

Norway

Out of all of the countries in the world, Norway is at the top for pizza consumption. With 5.5 million people, they eat around 11lbs of pizza annually, placing them on top.

This is a large statistic and is a surprising fact. For many, Norway would not be the assumed country of choice, however it is clear that Norwegians do love their pizza.

USA

After Norway, you have the USA. Americans are typically known for their large portions and fatty, delicious foods, so pizza has to be on the list.

Although the US is one of the largest countries in the world with an ever growing population, their pizza consumption is not high enough to make it to first place.

This is because of the size of market and the average consumption of pizza. However, there is no doubt that you will find a mouth-watering pizza in the US.

United Kingdom

The British are known for their fast foods – fish and chips, Indian curries, Chinese takeout – you name it, they love it. and with all that fast food, pizza is one of the most loved.

However, with such a small population and countless takeout options to choose from, their consumption of pizza is not enough to make first place.

But they are in the top three in the world, showing their love for all things fast food.

Germany

Germany is another country who loves pizza, consuming pizza constantly and earning them a pizza industry worth €1.2 billion.

Based on this, it is clear that the pizza market for Germany is very successful and will only continue to grow.

You were probably wondering when Italy would make the list. Although pizza originated from this country, they are not the ones who consume the most pizza, not even making it into the top three.

You will typically find Italians consuming pasta and vegetables, for they love to cook with fresh ingredients to make beautiful dishes.

Pizza may not be the most eaten, but that does not mean it is not loved by Italy.

Russia

Pizza is becoming more and more popular in Russia, especially in its capital, Moscow. What makes pizza so appealing in Russia too is how they have shaped it to become unique to the country.

Try drinking some vodka with it, or perhaps top your pizza with salmon and caviar.

France

In France, the pizza industry is worth an amazing €7 million and is a dish loved my many. Although 7th on the list, France is known to enjoy the pizza.

To put it into perspective, in Europe France are in the top three for pizza consumption.

Bottom Three Pizza Loving Countries

Australia

Pizza, however, is at a close second, allowing them a place on this list. You can guarantee good pizza from Australia as they take pride in adapting the traditional Italian dish.

Japan

Pizza is enjoyed by the Japanese but not consumed as frequently as other countries such as the USA or Norway.

If someone from Japan was to order a pizza, this would most likely be because of a special occasion or celebration, contrasting extremely with other countries (particularly Western) who consume pizza for leisure.

China

The last on the list is China. Typically, you will find Chinese consuming wholesome dishes such as rice, spring rolls, dumplings, noodles, but it has been found that people in China are starting to take an interest in pizza.

Although not the most popular choice and frequently eaten, China’s consumption of pizza has grown, allowing them to make it to the top ten list of countries.

Bottom Three Pizza Loving Countries

Final Thoughts

It is clear the amount of love the world has for pizza. Although originating in Italy, countries have found ways to adapt the pizza and make it into something unique, appealing to their culture.

There are some countries who opt for the traditional pizza, others who enjoy the extra cheesy, thick garlic filled crust pizza.

What is noticeable from the top three countries listed is how they all have a love for takeout and how to them pizza is something of a casual thing.

In the UK, people may choose to have a pizza for their dinner or buy one to eat cold in the morning.

The US is famous for their love of different foods, selling huge greasy pizzas to all and always being available for pizza delivery.

Norway, on the top of our list, is a country who eats pizza casually and is a cuisine which is loved by many.

Overall, no matter what country eats the most pizza, we can all agree as a society that Italians have provided the world with a great dish, making a huge global market.

So, if you’re thinking about adventuring and discovering new foods, try indulging yourself in a different country’s pizza and fall in love with the doughy dish all over again.
